Energy Detective Visits Belfast City Hall

Energy Detective Visits Belfast City Hall On Monday16th October the Energy Detective visited the newly reopened Belfast City Hall.

Members of the Eco-Committee from Euston Street Primary School in east Belfast performed a drama in the City Hall for visiting members of the public and The Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Danny Lavery to mark the start of Energy Saving Week 2009.

The drama showed how a family’s energy costs and carbon footprint could be reduced by implementing a few simple changes to their lifestyles, as recommended by the Energy Detective, such as fitting home insulation, taking showers instead of baths, using low energy light bulbs and switching things off.

The drama also covered topics related to waste, with the problems associated with contamination in the recycling bin and food waste also tackled.

Earlier in the day, the pupils had performed the drama for Belfast City Council staff in the Cecil Ward Building, to highlight to them the changes they could make to reduce their impact on the environment.

George Lyttle, Education Coordinator with Bryson Education who worked with the pupils from Euston Street said “Everyone who watched the performance commented on how good it was and were impressed by the fact that all the props used in the drama were made by the pupils reusing waste materials.”

He added “This was a great way of getting messages around saving energy, reducing carbon emissions and recycling properly across to the public and to the young people involved and their families. Thanks must go to all the young people involved, their teacher Ms. Haliday and Martin Doherty and his team from Belfast City Council.”
