Environmental Week at Maguiresbridge P.S.

Environmental Week at Maguiresbridge P.S. At Maguiresbridge Primary School they believe it is crucially important that children leave school with an appreciation of the environment and their role in maintaining and improving it. To this end they recently held an ‘Environmental Awareness Week,’ during which there was a special emphasis placed on the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

As part of the ‘Environmental Awareness Week,’ which ran from 23rd to the 27th November, they had various visiting speakers including Elaine Brownlee from the Northern Ireland Energy Agency who taught the children about the importance of saving energy, fossil fuels and natural resources to prevent global warming. Focussed lessons were delivered to all year groups, with teachers also tackling similar subjects with their class, at other times during the week. The talk was very informative and enjoyable and the children learnt a lot about the need to save energy which was further reinforced with a quiz, the prize of which was a water powered clock for each of the winning team’s members!

Within school the children are getting the opportunity to put their learning into practice by, turning off electrical items when they are not in use and advising their families on insulation methods in the home. This will hopefully be of great benefit to the school and the local community as the children develop sustainable attitudes to natural resources and begin to care for the environment.
