The first week of May was Environment Week in Orangefield Primary School in East Belfast. Pupils from throughout the school took part in workshops and activities with an environmental theme and Bryson Education was there to lend a hand.
Workshops were arranged for every class, and activities ranged from the ever popular Mr Rat’s Recycling Roadshow for the youngest pupils, to presentations, workshops and art activities for older students.
The first week of May was also National Composting Week and many of the workshops had a composting theme, linking composting and recycling, and included learning about wormeries, compost heaps and the new food waste collection scheme recently introduced by Belfast City Council.
Years four and seven made Grass Heads reusing old tights and compost to make heads that grow grass for hair and year five and six made paper ‘fortune tellers’ filled with composting facts.
George Lyttle, Education Coordinator with Bryson Education said ‘This week was a great opportunity for all the pupils in the school to be involved in activities learning about waste, recycling and the environment. The children were very enthusiastic and I was very impressed with their knowledge!’
This waste education programme, funded by Belfast City Council, is available to all schools within the Belfast area free of charge. If your school would like to be involved, please George Lyttle by phone on 028 9026 9956 or e-mail – glyttle@nienergyagency.org
