Key Stage 3
This is a new programme aimed at Key Stage 3. It is intended to link in with the new 'citizenship' strand of the curriculum, as well as science and geography. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is becoming increasingly important, and the programme will use education about waste and recycling to deal with some important issues. It is anticipated that Key Stage 3 pupils will develop their skills in participation and responsible action, fundamental elements of citizenship.
The Sustainable World
A general presentation dealing with the basics of why we need to recycle, sustainability, energy issues etc.
The Mobile World
A classroom based activity on the importance of recycling mobile phones. Pupils look at where materials come from, where they go and design their own 'eco-phone'.
The Disposable World
Pay As You Throw, Yes Or No? An investigation into how we deal with waste. In groups the young people must decide how to get people to deal with their own waste in a sustainable way. Is charging the answer or is their a better way?
Paper Recycling Workshop
Hands on workshop where every pupil makes their own piece of card from recycled newspapers. An excellent workshop for all abilities explaining some of the reasons behind recycling e.g. energy use, resource depletion etc and demonstrates a recycling process from start to finish.
